Even Zimbabwe’s self-proclaimed “biggest comedian in the world”, Carl Joshua Ncube, praised the young comedian for his exploits.
The comical Chigubu was the closing act on both days as Ncube, Cde Fatso and the general Ntando Van Moyo left the about 150 people in stitches over the two days.
Chigubu’s 30-minute performance was filled with comical jabs at arts personalities in the city such as Raisedon Baya for his dark skin, William Nyandoro for his potbelly and Khuxman known for his fast-paced road show presentations. Chigubu imagines Khuxman, who is a fast-speaker in his road shows, being in a relationship with the extremely slow-paced and solemn presenter of Esandleni Somusa, Busi Sibanda.
On the two days he entered the stage wearing a jacket, shirt, tie, jeans and takkies and made people sing a reggae chorus of his punch phrase, Yeye!
Ncube said Chigubu needed to have his material exposed online so that he could get much-needed exposure.
He said that was the way he got shows to perform in South Africa and Uganda.
“Clive is a better comedian than I am but the difference is that people know me because I put my stuff on YouTube and other social networks. He should do that, because I got gigs because I put my video clips online. Comedy is not my strength,” said Ncube.
He said the DVD of the show would be out soon as he would start editing it as soon as possible.
Chigubu thanked those who came to support the show and promised more.
He said it was about supporting local products in order for people to have fun while having a good time.
“This is like an art form and people should support us and not ask for free tickets for the show,” said Chigubu with a chuckle.
It was a fast-paced, rib-cracking show from all the comics as they made people look into their behaviour.
The multiracial crowd were not spared as they made fun of people’s race, tribe and gender.
In separate interviews after both shows, fans said this was what they wanted to see, home-grown talent.
“We watch on DVDs people like Trevor Noah, Dave Chappell and Chris Rock, but we have our own. We should support them as much as we can as people. Hats off to the organisers for this show,” said Mthokozisi Munakandafa.
Mitch from Barham Green said the show was good although some jokes he did not get.
He said it was a good night out with his friends. People took a break from the stresses of load and water shedding, in their respective neighbourhoods.
Cde Fatso laughed off Zesa’s plans to harness nuclear power by 2020 to solve the perennial shortage of electricity in the country.
“Zesa is failing to manage simple hydro and thermal power, what more nuclear power,” he said, drawing laughter from the crowd.
