Chikomba wins US Collegiate athletes gong

ZIMBABWEAN long jump sensation Tafadzwa “Tah” Chikomba has capped off a legendary American collegiate season by being named the USTFCCCA National Men’s Field Athlete of the Year on Monday.

Chikomba (25) is just the second Wildcat to earn the honour, the first for the men’s team, since Akela Jones was named the Women’s Field Athlete of the Year in 2015.

The prestigious honour, awarded by the US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, cements the Kansas State University junior’s status as a dominant force in global athletics.

Chikomba is the first male athlete in Kansas State history to win the national award.

His national recognition follows a historic campaign where he repeatedly rewrote the record books.

Earlier this month, he captured the gold medal at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

His lifetime-best, wind-legal leap of 8.37 metres was the furthest distance recorded to win the NCAA outdoor crown since 2018.

By securing the national title, Chikomba became only the second Wildcats athlete to win the event, emulating Herb Hoskins’ historic victory in 1951.

The national award puts the finishing touches on a flawless seasonal resume.

Over the course of the year, Chikomba swept nearly every major accolade available to him.

At the NCAA West Preliminary round, he unleashed a staggering, wind-aided 8.75m leap — the furthest all-conditions mark in NCAA history.

He captured both the Big 12 Indoor (8.09m) and Outdoor (8.27m) conference titles, shattering school and facility records along the way.

He was voted the USTFCCCA Midwest Region Field Athlete of the Year.

With an NCAA title and a National Athlete of the Year trophy secured, the young Zimbabwean now turns his sights toward the international stage, where his explosive distances position him as a genuine medal contender for Zimbabwe.

This is the second USTFCCCA award for the native of Zimbabwe, he was previously named the Midwest Region Field Athlete of the Year on June 18.

Chikomba was named to The Bowerman watch list on June 4, the semi-finalists will be announced to-morrow.

Other USTFCCCA national honourees for the men include Ja’Kobe Tharp (Auburn) as Track Athlete of the Year, Zimbabwean Ken Harnden (Auburn) as Assistant Coach of the Year and Doug Case (Arkansas) as Coach of the Year.

On the women’s side, Axelina Johansson (Nebraska) as Field Athlete of the Year, Adaejah Hodge (Geor-gia) and Sanu Jallow-Lockhart (Arkansas) as Co-Track Athletes of the Year, Karim Abdel Wahab (Georgia) as Assistant Coach of the Year and Caryl Smith Gilbert (Georgia) as Coach of the Year. — Agencies
