GOLFER Martin Chikwanha was crowned the inaugural Pan-African golf tournament winner, with Stuart Preston coming second, while veteran golfers-cum-academics such as former Africa University Vice-Chancellor, Rukudzo Murapa, graced the event at Leopard Rock in Vumba last Saturday.
The tournament was initiated by a group of golfers within the Africa University fraternity.
John Crowe, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Samuel Bayon, Dean of the Faculty of Management and Administration, Alex Kasonde, senior lecturer in French within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and Auxillia Chideme-Munodawafa of the Faculty of Health Sciences.
They are all regular golfers.
In a statement, the organisers said: “When the idea for the tournament was first mooted there were concerns that it may replace or supersede our Africa University Charity Golf tournament held annually in October.
“However, the Africa University Charity Golf tournament, run by business friends of the university, is solely for the purpose of raising funds for children in orphanages and will remain on the AU golf calendar.
“The organisers of the Pan-African International tournament wanted to broaden its scope in order to attract players and visitors from the region and beyond. Its purpose being to raise funds for our proposed Multi-Purpose Sports and Recreational Centre to be utilised by both students, staff and local community groups.
“Importantly the idea was enthusiastically supported by our Vice-Chancellor Munashe Furusa who has now taken up the game and enjoying its attractions.
“We were supported by a number of local and national companies including Nicoz Diamond, Golden Peacock Hotel, MBCA Bank, SIS Inspections of Harare, Holiday Inn Harare, Victoria Fall Hotel, Khan, a local businessman and others.
“We want to thank all players and sponsors for their support of an initiative that hopes to not only forge links with others within and beyond our borders but cement itself in the golfing calendar in years to come.” — Africa University/Weekender Reporter.
