supreme sacrifices paid by the country’s sons and daughters to achieve independence in 1980.
The 30-member outfit established themselves on the local music scene with their debut album, “Muri Nhume” early this year.
The 10-track chimurenga and jit album also reminds people of the achievements that Zimbabwe has scored since Independence in 1980 like land redistribution, farming, mining and the economy through black empowerment.
Speaking during the launch last week, Media, Information and Publicity Minister Webster Shamu said the album was a “living testament” to the significance of Chimurenga music in reminding the people of their revolutionary past as well as rallying them to stay focused on the ideals of the liberation struggle.
“During the liberation struggle music was effectively used to artistically protest colonial oppression, to relieve psychological or physical strain and to relay important messages to the fighting liberation forces and the general masses,” he said.
“Music reminded people of the exploitative conditions in which they were living, conditions which they needed to speak against and fight. Chimurenga music inspired, agitated and empowered the people to rise up against British colonialism.”
Minister Shamu, who is also the Zimbabwe Union of Musicians patron, said today’s musicians should “vocalise” current national economic development and empowerment programmes.
“Any artiste worth his or her salt must represent his people with integrity and dignity. Artistes are social commentators who communicate and comment on important issues in society,” he said.
The album is also spiced by a reggae track, “Nhamo Yaiona Vakomana”, which urges people to value the contribution of war heroes during the liberation struggle.
The other track includes the title track “Baba Tinotenda”, a tribute to President Mugabe for his people-oriented ideas.
There is also “Nguva Yakwana”, “MaComrades”, “MuZimbabwe”, “VaMugabe Vakanaka”, “Negidi”, “Taishingirira”, “Tsigirai” and “PaChibondo”.
The album is a must-listen as it addresses issues that affect every Zimbabwean.
