RISING high jump star Tatenda Chindowa put up an impressive performance on Wednesday to win Zimbabwe’s first medal at the Confederation of African Athletics Under-18/Under-20 Championships in Abeokuta, Nigeria.

Chindowa scooped a silver medal in the Under-18 men with a 2.03m jump at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena.

“It’s a nice way to open the competition for the team,” said Chindowa.

Chindowa carried the momentum from the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Youth Games where he won a silver medal, to the continental meet.

“I was scared. This is continental now, it’s different from the Region 5, which is like 10 countries. It’s like 40-something countries here, so I was like, it’s going to be tough.

“I am honoured. This is my first time, these two times (AUSC Region 5 Games and the CAA Championships) are my first time representing the country.

“I have always wanted to represent the country since 2023. I have been working towards this so I am happy to contribute to the team,” said Chindowa.
