A CHINHOYI municipal police officer was injured after clashing with vendors during an operation to get rid of vendors in the Central Business District here yesterday.

Virginia Mlambo suffered a suspected fractured leg.

Acting Town Clerk, Eng Simon Marara, told H – Metro, he was advised of the skirmishes.

“I have been advised so, there are some vendors who tried to resist,” said Marara. We also encourage those who were allocated new vending spaces to take up that.”

One of the vendors, who attacked Mlambo, was arrested.

“The guy assaulted her with brooms before other vendors joined in assaulting her,” an eyewitness told H-Metro.

“A Council vehicle was damaged after two female vendors, who sell beer near the bus terminus, threw stones aimed at the car.

“I understand the other seven vendors were arrested.”

A Council employee, who chose not to be named, said the police officers were enforcing Council orders.

“This did not go down well with the vendors and they ganged up against the municipal police officers.

“I don’t understand why these two women, who were the ones who started throwing stones at the vehicle, were not arrested.”
