Chipanga set for ‘come back’

AFTER making headlines last year for reaching out to fans to help him pay off his debts, popular sungura musician cum prophet, Hosiah Chipanga, will be making a comeback by producing a DVD. Chipanga has been on a musical sabbatical at his rural home in Watsomba. With the assistance of Big Jokar Records owned by Madzibaba John Karembera of the Johane Masowe Yechishanu Yenyenyedzi Nomwe, Chipanga is set to release the six-track DVD, Mabasa in May.
Speaking in an interview, he expressed hope that the DVD will help people understand his music better.

Said Chipanga:“I am grateful to Madzibaba John and Big Jokar Records for helping me in fulfilling my vision as a musician. Personally I think that most people do not understand my music because my songs do not have videos to go with them. I am sure that is why I was labelled controversial at some point in time. Now that I am getting assistance to produce a DVD, my message will be understood better.

“The way Big Jokar creates medleys is appealing to me so when they offered to assist me, I accepted their offer with open arms. I thank Madzibaba for his efforts and I must say that this is a breakthrough in its own respect. I was lagging behind but now, I will catch up with other artistes. It is high time music is taken to a higher level. I just want my fans to know that Chipanga haasati apera.”

Chipanga would not reveal the exact release date for the DVD, citing piracy reasons.
Madzibaba John Karembera said assisting artistes like Chipanga was part of Big Jokar Records’ vision.

“As part of our vision as Big Jokar, we strive to support artistes in every way we can so that this country’s music industry continues to flourish. Chipanga’s DVD focuses on real life issues and we tried our best to bring these out in the best way we could as a recording company. There is also a bonus track on the DVD,” he said.

The DVD is being directed and produced by upcoming producers, Abel Tee, Sir Tiger and Akon B.
Chipanga is one of the oldest and quite lyrically gifted musicians in Zimbabwe with over 10 albums against his name.
