STEALING property and cash amounting to $5 500 from a motor vehicle landed a Chipinge man in trouble.
Joshua Mutumani (27) of Ziyapenduka Village in Tamandai under Chief Mutema pleaded guilty when he appeared before Chipinge magistrate, Mr Noah Gwatidzo facing charges of theft as defined in Section 113 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23.
Public Prosecutor, Mr Witness Nyamundaya, said on August 14, at around 6pm, the complainant, Patience Chademana (38) who is employed in South Africa left Chipinge town in company of her husband while driving a Honda Fit vehicle going to their home at Marirangwe Secondary School in Chipinge.
Upon arrival at Mvurachena Primary School, they picked Joshua who was destined for Junction Gate Bus Stop.
While Joshua was aboard the motor vehicle, he saw Patience’s black handbag which contained money and property worth $5 500 on the floor behind the driver’s seat.
Joshua picked the handbag and advised the driver to stop the vehicle about a kilometre before his earlier mentioned bus stop.
He then dropped off with the hand bag.
Patience discovered the theft at the next bus stop when she wanted to take money from her handbag.
She made a police report and the police alerted other local villagers about the theft.
On August 15, at around 5pm, police officers received information to the effect that Joshua was in possession of the stolen property.
Police quickly reacted to the information and arrested Joshua while in possession of the property.
Police managed to recover cash amounting to R23 190, $119, a Zimbabwean passport in Patience Chademana’s name, a Nokia Lumia cellphone, two bank cards, two wallets, one side socks and a Pioneer bus ticket from Joshua.
Patience was called by the police and she positively identified her property which she had reported as stolen.
The total value of stolen property was $5 500 and property worth $2 200 was recovered.
