Chitembwe steps down as CAPS Utd coach

Sports Reporter

LLOYD Chitembwe has stepped down as CAPS United coach and the Green Machine leadership will announce major changes in their technical staff today.

Chitembwe led Makepekepe to the league championship in 2016 after having won the title as a player in 1996, 2004 and 2005.

He is the most decorated CAPS United player in history and is the only coach to lead the Green Machine to the group stages of the Champions League.

Chitembwe had come under pressure from a section of the club’s fans after a poor start to the season.

He will remain within the CAPS United set-up and will assume the newly-created post of technical director.

The incoming new coach, who is set to be named this week and has been recruited from outside the club’s structures, will have absolute control of the first team’s affairs.

“Lodza felt that there was a lot of negativity around the team related to his presence and felt it was in the best interest of the club to step aside,” said sources.

“He communicated that to the club’s leaders and they finally agreed on Sunday that a new broom should come in.

“They will announce the new coach, who will come with his own backroom staff, this week and he will be given absolute control of the first team’s affairs.”

No comment could be obtained from the CAPS leadership or Chitembwe yesterday.
