Chitungwiza Municipality is seeking external debt collection services in an effort to recover nearly $60 million owed by clients for various services rendered.
The local authority is estimated to be owed nearly $35 million by residents while commercial and industrial debtors are sitting on about $24 million. Chitungwiza Municipality, which has for years presided over burst sewer and water pipes, blocked drainage systems, uncollected garbage, non-running tap water and employee salary arrears, attributes its challenges to poor revenue collection.hitungwiza Municipality is seeking external debt collection services in an effort to recover nearly $60 million owed by clients for various services rendered.
According to a Government gazette last Friday, the municipality is inviting bids from debt collecting companies wishing to assist it recover its money.
“Chitungwiza Municipality invites prospective companies registered with the State Procurement Board to participate in annual supply of debt collection services,” reads part of the public gazette.
Most parts of the town have gone for years without portable water, raising threats of water-borne disease outbreaks.
Areas such as Unit A, F, L and many others receive water once a week. Residents say this is insignificant for their domestic use.
The majority of Chitungwiza residents now have wells in their backyards, posing a danger to them as they risk falling into the pits.
