Choppies staff rope in customer to steal

Shamiso Dzingire Court Reporter
TWO Choppies employees have been convicted of conniving with a customer to steal groceries from a supermarket they work in. Sinikiwe Khumalo, a till operator and Edmore Mananaire, a security guard connived with Bonginkosi Sibindi to steal items worth about $150.

A court heard how Sibindi filled a shopping trolley with goods and Khumalo pretended to receipt them at the till point. At the door, the court heard, Mananaire pretended to check the groceries and let Sibindi through.

The trio ran out of luck on Sunday when an alert security guard discovered the scheme and arrested them. The three appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Sibongile Msipa Marondedze facing a theft charge.

They were all convicted on their plea of guilty and were remanded in custody to today for sentencing. Prosecuting, Maria John said on Sunday, Sibindi got into the supermarket and started filling a trolley with groceries.

She said Sibindi went to a till point where Khumalo was. “Khumalo pretended as if she was receipting the groceries when she wasn’t,” John said. Sibindi proceeded to the check out point where Mananaire was manning the entrance the court heard.

“Mananaire deliberately let Sibindi out of the supermarket without paying for the groceries,” John told the court.
