A 29-YEAR-OLD man from Emakhandeni in Bulawayo, learnt the hard way that crime doesn’t pay when he was sentenced to eight months in jail for stealing two packs of cigarettes from a vendor with disability.
Clayton Ncube appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Progress Murandu facing a charge of theft.
He pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to eight months in prison. However, four months of the sentence were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
The remaining four months were further suspended on condition that he completes 172 hours of community service.
The court heard that on 24 July 2023, along Fifth Avenue and Fife Street, the accused approached Sarah Chimunde, who was sitting and selling goods. The accused grabbed two packs of Madison cigarettes and ran away.
It was heard that the complainant who could not run after the accused yelled out to the public alerting them of the theft.
The people who heard her then chased and managed to apprehend him.
Furthermore, the people who caught Ncube made him return the stolen property and took him to the police station where a report was made.
