HARARE City Council has warned waste pickers and waste recycling companies that have set up illegal storage hubs in the Central Business District to remove them.
Acting Town Clerk, Engineer Phakamile Moyo, yesterday said the waste hubs were creating an eyesore in the CBD.
“The City of Harare has noticed that waste recycling companies and buyers of recyclable waste are buying recyclable waste from waste pickers who have in the process set up ‘storage hubs’ at undesignated points across the city,” he said.
“While the city promotes waste recovery and minimisation of waste activities of the same, these ‘waste hubs’ created and set up by waste pickers are creating a public eyesore at skip points such as Market Square, Charge Office, Speke Avenue and Parkade Bus Terminus. Resultantly, these waste ‘storage hubs’ at these undesignated points have also resulted in the creation of illegal dumping points,” he said.
He said recycling companies, buyers of waste and waste pickers were encouraged to engage the City of Harare and liaise with the Acting Director of Works (+263 242 772507) for harmonisation of these waste management activities.
