PUBLIC transport operators in Mutare have reconfigured city ranks in line with efforts aimed at maintaining orderliness and professionalism after law enforcement agents last week intervened to tame lawlessness by touts and other rogue elements that was threatening to go out of hand.
With the law enforcers still maintaining their presence and patrolling the ranks and streets, the transporters have also moved to streamline their operations.
The development has resulted in only three designated ranks being operational in the city centre, while the others that have been mushrooming have since been abolished to ensure that passengers are picked up and dropped at designated points in the ranks.
The main city commuter rank is now at Mudzviti Bus Terminus, with the other two being at the Dangamvura and Chikanga ranks respectively.
All three ranks are being managed by registered associations.
In a statement today, one of the associations – Manicaland Drivers and Transporters Association (MDATA) – who are running the Mudzviti rank urged commuters to be picked or dropped only at designated points in the respective ranks.
“All commuters or passengers travelling to Dangamvura, Zimunya and Fern valley are advised that their commuter omnibuses have been designated to use Mudzviti Bus Terminus as their only designated rank in Mutare city.
MDATA is now playing the following routes: City-Hillview, City-Destiny (Area16), City-Area 13/14/Complex, City- Complex Mapipe, City-Madhumbe, City-Munezhu/Boka, City-Zimunya and City-Fern Valley,” reads the statement.
