THE Central Mechanical Equipment Department (CMED) recently donated blankets to the elderly and the disabled at the now-defunct Vanad Mine in Zvimba as part of its corporate social responsibility.
The chrome mine, located at the heart of the Great Dyke Mountain, closed down 30 years ago, thereby putting the lives of its employees in a quandary.
Many of the mine’s former workers are from neighbouring countries.
Speaking during the hand-over of the blankets, CMED’s public relations officer, Mrs Tarisai Mugombi said the donation will be extended to other parts of the country.
Zvimba North Legislator and Mashonaland West Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Marrian Chombo also donated food items and said the donation is in line with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s mantra of leaving no one and no place behind.
Two of the beneficiaries, Mrs Betina Tarakuwa and Ms Senior Ngusta of Malawi and Mozambique respectively said the donation came at the right time as they were in need of blankets and food.
An 85-year-old Mr Freddy Malasheka, originally from Zambia, echoed the same sentiments.
Mr Malasheka worked at the mine from the age of 16 until its closure.
