COMMENT: BABY SOLD TO RAPE FOR A BED: When a mother betrays her own blood

THERE are crimes that shake a nation. Then there are betrayals that cut deeper than any blade. The shocking Esigodini baby rape case is both.

A 10-month-old child, still learning to crawl and babble, was allegedly violated in the one place she should have been safest, her own home.

But what has left the country stunned is not only the alleged actions of the man accused of the crime, but the conduct of the child’s own mother.

A 31-year-old woman now stands accused of choosing a promised bed over justice for her baby.

Let us be clear from the start. She is innocent until proven guilty. The courts will decide whether she was fixing the man out of anger over a broken relationship or whether this horror truly happened as alleged. But whatever the final ruling may be, one thing is beyond debate. A mother has a sacred duty to protect her child. That duty must never be traded for money, furniture, love or revenge.

According to court papers, the woman allegedly left her boyfriend alone with her 10-month-old daughter. When she returned, she allegedly found him abusing the infant. Instead of calling the police, instead of screaming for help, instead of running to neighbours, she allegedly accepted a promise of a bed and let him walk free. If true, that is not motherhood. That is abandonment.

A baby cannot speak. A baby cannot fight. A baby cannot run to the police station. A baby depends entirely on the mother’s courage and instinct to survive in a cruel world. That is the beautiful responsibility of motherhood. And any woman who treats her child as a bargaining chip in love wars does not deserve that title.

Even if this case turns out to be a revenge plot against a cheating lover, then the child was still dragged into a dirty adult battle. Used as a weapon. Used as a pawn. Used as a story on page 2 https://www.facebook.com/share/p/17ouM42opn/

That alone is unforgivable.

A mother is supposed to be a shield, not a dealer. A mother is supposed to be a lioness, not a negotiator. A mother is supposed to choose her child over comfort, over romance, over gifts, over everything.

Instead, this baby was allegedly left in danger, silenced in exchange for a bed, and only remembered when love turned sour.

This is not just a criminal case. It is a moral collapse.
Zimbabwe has buried too many children. We have cried too many tears. We have marched too many coffins to the grave. We cannot allow a society where babies are traded for furniture and justice is delayed until hearts are broken.

The courts will do their work. The law will take its course.

But as a nation, we must speak loudly. Any parent who exposes a child to harm, whether through negligence, greed or emotional revenge, should face the full weight of the law and the full shame of society.

A child is not a bargaining chip. A child is not a secret to be sold. A child is not a weapon in love wars.
A child is life. And life must be protected at all costs.
