LONG and middle-distance runners will tomorrow converge at Chitungwiza Town Centre for the Commissioner-General of Police 21km road race.

The race, which will start and finish at Chitungwiza Town Centre, will see participants taking part in the open category, juniors, veterans, masters, grandmasters, uniformed forces and wheelchair race.

The race has been running for 10 years and tomorrow’s event is expected to attract athletes from across the country, with Wirimai Juwawo, Gilbert Mutandiro, Cephas Pasipamire, Olivia Chitate and Constance Nyasango leading the way.

Zimbabwe Republic Police Staff Officer responsible for Sport Superintendent Joshua Tigere said they are looking forward to the big event.

“The race will start at Chitungwiza Town Centre and finish there as well, but the route will go through Seke, Zengeza and some places around Chitungwiza.

“We are expecting around 300 participants, some of whom are high-profile athletes.

“Wirimai Juwawo will defend his title in the men’s section and Constance Nyasango in the women’s section. We are fielding our very own Olivia Chitate and Cephas Pasipamire. These are some of the high profile athletes that we are going to have.

“The competition has been running for the past 10 years. The 21km race has been held in Mabvuku before, but we changed to Chitungwiza this year. We used to have the 10km race in Chitungwiza, but we have replaced it with the 21km race.

“Also, it is being sponsored by Old Mutual and it’s the second year running. Last year we had them again,” said Tigere.

Old Mutual have increased the race’s sponsorship package for tomorrow’s race from last year’s.

And Tigere said they have also increased the prize money to US$600 for the 21km winners in both sections from US$500.
