A MUTARE-based Commissioner of Oaths recently appeared at the Mutare Civil Courts applying for downward variation of the $60 he is paying for his child.Appearing before Mrs Sharon Chipanga, Patrick Ndlovu, pleaded with the court to review the maintenance downwards saying the amount he was paying was too much.
“I have been paying $60 monthly for the child’s upkeep all along Your Worship. I pray that the amount be reviewed to $25,” pleaded Ndlovu.
Asked why he was applying for downward variation, Ndlovu said: “I am self employed Your Worship. I sell cellphones and have a flea market. I also have a pregnant wife. I cannot afford the $60.”
Tendai Mukumire, the mother of the child, said: “He is lying. He is a Commissioner of Oaths stationed at Meikles Park.
“He makes close to $300 monthly. I want $100 for the child he fathered. The child is about to enrol for secondary school. $60 is not enough, yet he wants it to be reviewed downwards.”
The magistrate asked him why he had not mentioned that he was a Commissioner of Oaths and he answered: “To me, it is not a form of employment, but a national service.”
The court dismissed his application and was ordered to continue paying $60 for his son.
