Community service for abortion

Tsitsi Muedzwa pleaded guilty to the charge of terminating pregnancy when she appeared before Magistrate Mr Lazarus Murendo.

She was slapped with a 16-month- jail term, but six months were suspended on condition of good behaviour.
The remaining 10 months were suspended on condition she performs 350 hours of community service at Chishawasha Clinic.
Prosecutor Ms Patience Chimusaru proved that on December 12 last year, Peter Mugunya, a member of the ZRP constabulary unit was tipped that Muedzwa had aborted and buried the foetus.

Acting on the tip off, Mugunya proceeded to Muedzwa’s house and questioned her about the abortion.
Muedzwa admitted that she had aborted by drinking a concoction before burying the foetus in a maize field.
