Constable Courage Muchechesi, who was killed in cold blood while recording a statement at Zimbabwe Republic Police Sanyati Charge Office on Sunday, will be buried in his rural home of Gutu, Masvingo.

Constable Muchechesi was fatally shot in the stomach by the suspect, Vengesai Jabulani Mutasa, aged 41, around 2 am with an unlicensed gun.

Speaking to Zimpapers on Tuesday, Sanyati legislator, who is also Mines and Mining Development Deputy Minister, Dr Polite Kambamura, confirmed the burial arrangements.

“We are saddened as Sanyati Constituency. The young and energetic Constable Muchechesi will surely be remembered for his dedication to work. His body will be taken to Gutu, his rural area, for burial,” he said.

The legislator who is also assisting the bereaved family urged the Sanyati community to give Constable Muchechesi a befitting send-off.

Mutasa was arrested on Sunday after the Patchway, Chakari, Sanyati and Kadoma community members joined forces with the police to track and apprehend him.

He has also been linked to the murder of Ruwa businessman Joseph Mutangadura in August this year, with national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi revealing that Mutasa’s unlicensed gun was used in the two murder cases.

Detectives in Harare received information that he was initially hiding in Kadoma, and later in Sanyati, where he was now renting a house.

“He had just been visited by his girlfriend, before the detectives pounced on his house,” said Commissioner Nyathi.

“Unfortunately, there was a shootout where one of the tenants was injured. A police detective was also injured and is currently admitted in hospital.”

He said on the day of the shoot-out, Mutasa fled from his house half-naked.

“He went to the police station, where he then attacked Constable Muchechesi whom he allegedly killed in cold-blood.

“He then robbed a person who was making a report to the police. He took his US$5 and went away,” Commissioner Nyathi added.
