A Hatfield motorist, Lovemore Mwatsiye, 31, will spend four months in prison or pay a fine of US$150 for providing false information regarding an accident involving a Government car.

Mwatsiye was convicted of deliberately misleading the authorities, which is a serious offence under Zimbabwean law.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Criminal Investigations Department (CID)’s acting provincial spokesperson, Detective Assistant Inspector Merylin Muriro, spoke about the severity of such actions.

“Falsifying a report of theft or robbery is not only unethical but also a criminal offence. Those found on the wrong side of the law will face arrest,” she said.

On October 18, 2025, Mwatsiye went to Belgravia Shopping Centre in Harare and parked his Government vehicle, an Isuzu KB 250, and went to drink beer with friends.

After consuming a significant amount of alcohol, he allowed a friend to drive the car while he followed in another friend’s car.

The Isuzu was subsequently involved in an accident. Instead of reporting the accident, Mwatsiye reported to Avondale Police Station that the vehicle had been stolen.

He also filed a report at Traffic at Harare Central Police Station about the accident. Matswiye was charged for permitting an unlicensed driver to drive the Government vehicle.

Investigations quickly uncovered the truth.

Mwatsiye appeared before Magistrate Gara Jeckie at the Harare Magistrates Court on October 23, 2025.

Prosecutor Phumuzile Ndlovu represented the State. Mwatsiye was imprisoned for four months wholly suspended on condition that he pays a US$150 fine.
