A Gweru police officer who allegedly assaulted his girlfriend leaving her for dead after she refused to withdraw an assault case she had earlier reported against him was yesterday back in court. Denford Nyamumwe, 24, stationed at ZRP Monomotapa police station, allegedly beat up Sikhangezile Sigiyo until she fainted before shoving her under a bed and fleeing from the scene.

He appeared before Gweru magistrate Vimbai Makora facing a charge of assault.

Nyamumwe pleaded not guilty and was remanded on $50 bail to November 19 for continuation of trial.

For the state Blessing Neta told the court that on October 11 this year, Nyamumwe went to Sigiyo’s home.

He asked her if she still insisted on pursuing the assault case she had reported earlier against him at ZRP Central in Gweru.

The court heard that the Sigiyo did not reply.

Her silence allegedly angered Nyamumwe who then kicked her on the chest and punched her in the face.

The court heard that Sigiyo fainted and the Nyamumwe pushed her under the bed and walked away.

Sigiyo sustained serious injuries on her left leg.

She attended the court session with a heavily bandaged leg and seemed to be experiencing difficulties in walking.
