The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (Zacc) yesterday arrested two police officers deployed at the Lion’s Den tollgate along the Harare-Chirundu highway for taking a $1 bribe from a motorist.
Paul Muchenje, stationed at ZRP Chemagamba, Chinhoyi, and Shamiso Nyabasa of ZRP Chinhoyi Central are expected to appear in court today.
The complainant in the case is the State.
Blessing Mazinyama, a motorist, informed Zacc of the police officers’ corrupt activities.
On Wednesday, Mazinyama compiled a report for Zacc and indicated that police officers deployed at the said tollgate were demanding bribes from motorists evading the tollgate.
The bribes they allegedly received ranged from USD$1 to USD$5 per vehicle.
The officers were also accused of threatening to impound vehicles evading the tollgate, with the penalty fee allegedly set at US$100.
Upon receiving this information, Zacc investigators set up a trap and used a dollar note (serial number D101548630) while aboard Mazinyama’s vehicle.
When the police officers signalled Mazinyama to stop, he disembarked from the vehicle and handed over the trap money to Muchenje, who went on to put it in his trousers’ pocket.
Zacc investigators then disembarked from the vehicle and identified themselves before apprehending the two accused persons.
