Four police officers allegedly stole US$57 000 and 2kg of pure gold at an accident scene near Selous along the Harare-Bulawayo highway on Saturday morning at around 4am.
The vehicle’s driver, Nobizita Gatawa, was unconscious when the four allegedly committed the crime.
The court heard the driver had US$80 000 and 2.16 kg of pure gold in his car.
The quartet – Rudo Tafa, Daniel Mujabuki, Musekiwa Karimanzira from ZRP Saruwe and Thomson Brian Chinyani from ZRP Norton Traffic – were on Tuesday arraigned before Norton Magistrate Ms Christine Nyandoro.
They were released on US$150 bail each.
The court heard that on Saturday, Tafa, Mujabuki and Karimanzira were informed that an accident had occurred just before the roundabout.
They went to their police station, picked up Chinyani and went to the accident scene.
The State claims that the quartet then stole US$ 57 000 and 2kg of gold.
They handed over US$ 22 500 to Gatawa’s father when he came to see him. That was when the offence was discovered.
Thomas Chanakira represented the State.
