A MAN from Harare has successfully applied for exemption from paying monthly child maintenance after his son turned 18.
Presiding Magistrate Ms Hannah Fazilahmed heard the application from Mr Prayers Mutasa, who sought to get financial relief from supporting his son, who is now an adult.
His former partner, Ms Juliet Mufasi, did not oppose the motion, acknowledging that the law permits the termination.
“It’s okay since it’s the law,” Ms Mufasi told the court.
However, she noted outstanding school fees that must be settled before their son’s O-Level results can be released.
Mutasa agreed to pay the arrears in full. Ms Fazilahmed formalised this commitment in her ruling, directing him to clear the fees by the time the results are issued.
Before concluding, Magistrate Fazilahmed advised Ms Mufasi that while parental maintenance ends at 18, the child may still petition the court directly for educational support if he is still studying and has no income.
