Cowdray Park man bites and bashes wife

SOME men buy their wives flowers to make up after a small lovers’ quarrel. Others write heartfelt notes or cook a special dinner. However, this Bulawayo man went for the ultimate wrong choice. Instead of roses, he delivered a combo of fists, a mouth bite, and a flying cellphone that met its death on a wall.

Onias Dube, a 33-year-old from Cowdray Park, stunned the court after he admitted to assaulting his wife, smashing her phone, and turning their home into a mini boxing ring during a heated argument.

Dube pleaded guilty to physical abuse and malicious damage to property when he appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Jeconia Prince Ncube. For his outburst, he walked away with a fine of US$230, split into two counts, and the gentle reminder that prison is waiting if he fails to pay up before 5 December 2025.

On the first count, he was fined US$110, with two months jail on standby. One month was suspended if he pays back the US$30 that the poor Villon phone is apparently worth.

On the second count, the court slapped him with US$120 or two months behind bars.
Prosecutor Cathrine Kuzu said the drama went down on 22 September around 10 AM. The couple was chilling at home when Dube received a phone call. As he chatted, his wife, Sibonginkosi Sibanda (26) decided to snatch the phone and speak to the caller herself. That single action lit the fuse.

In a flash, Dube lost his cool. He grabbed her phone, smashed it on the wall, and allegedly delivered several blows all over her body before biting her on the mouth. The battered wife was later hospitalised for examination.

A police report followed, and Dube’s short-lived boxing career ended in handcuffs. The phone remains dead, valued at US$30, with no compensation made.

Love may hurt, but not like this.
