UNDERESTIMATING the Eagles Women’s team captain, Modester Mupachikwa, by judging her by her height often leads to tears for the opposition.
For inside the diminutive Mupachikwa, lies a big and serious cricketing brain that can trigger the demise of many a team, at least the Domestic Women’s Cricket League can bear testimony.
The wicketkeeper and opening batter has enjoyed two fruitful seasons at the helm of the country’s biggest franchise, the Eagles.
Her CV boasts of the coveted two Cups that the women’s teams fight for every season – the Pro 50 and the Twenty20 championships.
Recently, the Eagles defended their two championships under her captaincy.
Eagles head coach, Trevor Garwe, praised Mupachikwa.
“I think she has done a fantastic job for us for the past two seasons so far.
“She has shown us that she has the requisite skills to lead and get everyone together.
“Whenever we are on top, it’s difficult for the opponent to wrestle us off positions of authority.
“Everyone sticks to the plan and it’s amazing how she manages to do all that.”
Garwe named Mupachikwa as the franchise’s captain.
“Her influence goes beyond the field. She is a role model on and off the pitch and coming from Glen View as well, I had the privilege of working with her back in the hood.
“At a very young age, she would be the first person to get to the training ground to train with the boys.
“Her work ethic comes second to none, she’s very disciplined and a dedicated cricketer.”
