CRZ says their battle is to keep basic goods on the supermarket shelves

THE Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers (CZR) says their main thrust right now is to ensure there is an availability of basic goods on the supermarket shelves.

In an interview, Denfod Mutashu, the founding president of the association, said they were working hard to ensure the availability of all basic products in all retail outlets.

“Retailers should strengthen their relationship with suppliers, while we are frantically working hard, beyond pricing, to ensure product availability on the shelves,” said Mutashu.

“A scenario where products are pricey, but available, is sometimes better than not having those products at all.

“Limiting quantities is happening globally, including in the UK and USA, for selected products like cooking oil, to avoid hoarding and ensure all customers have access.”

Meanwhile, a snap survey by this publication has seen customers expressing mixed sentiments over the price hikes and limited quantity of products to purchase.

A customer at a local supermarket, who identified herself as Rutendo Hore, said:

“Of course, the issue of limiting quantities is justifiable so that everyone can have access to basics.

“We can’t afford any price hikes for basics because salaries are not increasing and, at the end of the day, we end up suffering more.”

Another customer said no amount of price hike justification can be found in an environment where salaries are stagnant.

“There is a need for both the private and public sector to cushion workers through cost of living adjustment allowances,” said the customer.
