HARDLY a fortnight after two suspected rapists, Beston Nadholo and Norman Mutasa, were cornered in Dangamvura, two serial thieves who were causing sleepless nights in Chikanga high-density suburb were arrested on Monday.
Frank Matindi and his accomplice, whose identity was yet to be ascertained, received a thorough hiding from Chikanga Phase Three residents who apprehended them along Jeff Road after they attempted in vain to break into a house in the sprawling residential area at around 7am.
Earlier during the day, Matindi tried to steal from Tawanda Gamunorwa’s car at House Number 6928, Chikanga 3, but ran out of luck after the latter caught him just before he executed the botched plan.
Gamunorwa, who was sleeping in the car, quickly woke up and gave chase.
Residents in Chikanga and surrounding areas like Dreamhouse and Natview also reportedly lost their laptops, cell phones and other valuables to the cunning robbers.
The suspected thieves admitted to have stolen several goods and kept them at their house.
“He tried to open the canopy door without knowing that I was sleeping in the front seat.
“I confronted him before he vanished from my house.
“Everyday we have been experiencing such cases. Residents have been losing their valuables to these daring thieves who sometimes roam around armed with knives and knobkerries,” said Gamunorwa.
Another resident, Marvelous, who resides in Dreamhouse, said the thieves usually wait for unsuspecting people who travel out late and snatch their valuables before threatening them with death.
The two were in police custody and were assisting with investigations.
Manicaland provincial police spokesperson Inspector Enock Chishiri said they were working flat out to arrest criminals after receiving numerous cases of unlawful entry and robbery in Chikanga and surrounding suburbs.
“We urge people to be cautious against these daring thieves and robbers.
“They should not leave their houses unattended and they should secure their houses well. As police, we came up with initiatives such as neighbourhood watch committees to help combat these ills. We will continue to deploy our members to patrol in these and other areas,” Insp Chishiri said.
