DANDARO are the 2024 WAFA WAFA Communications League tournament winners.
Dandaro, coached by Tawanda “Danta” Mutatapatsi, edged the league’s best team, so far this season, FANtracker 4-3 on penalties in the final at Alex Sports Club on Saturday.
FANtracker are under the guidance of coach Brian “Mabinana” Kahonde and are unbeaten in the league.
The final had ended goalless in regulation time.
The victory marked Dandaro’s second WAFA-WAFA title, their first since 2019.
Dandaro’s path to the final was marked by impressive performances.
They cruised past Bengaz FC with a comprehensive 3-0 victory in the quarter-finals, and then edged Willdale 1-0 in the semi-finals.
The final against FANtracker was a tense affair, with both teams failing to score in regular time, leading to a dramatic penalty shootout where Dandaro held their nerve to secure the win.
FANtracker’s journey to the final was dominated by penalty shootouts.
They defeated Dairibord on penalties, after a 0-0 draw in the quarter-finals, and then ousted defending champions Tendo, also on penalties, following another goalless draw in the semi-finals.
Despite their strong defensive displays, FANtracker’s inability to score in all three of their knockout matches ultimately proved costly. Defending champions Tendo were knocked out in the semi-finals after failing to capitalise on their chances against FANtracker.
Tendo had earlier secured a 2-0 victory over Universal FC in the quarter-finals, but their quest for a fourth consecutive WAFA-WAFA title was thwarted in the last four.
In the other quarter-final match, Willdale overcame Towers with a narrow 1-0 win.
The tournament was supported by various sponsors including Tendo Electronics, Dairibord, Rainbow Towers, FANtracker, StarFM, Union Hardware, Go-Tile and VIEGO.
Both finalists walked away with a full soccer team kit and prize money.
This year’s tournament once again highlighted the competitive spirit and skills within the Communications League of Zimbabwe.
The league is the leading social football league in the country.
