THE desire to have ill-gotten fame crumbled like a deck of cards for a Dangamvura high-density schoolgirl after she was unmasked as a shameful and hopeless liar. Yelly Kaminyu became an overnight celebrity after claiming that she had scooped a whopping 10 accolades at her school, Nyamauru High School’s recently held speech and prize-giving day.
Instead of having her name etched in the school’s Hall of Fame, it is now boldly written in the Hall of Shame and has reduced herself to the school and community’s laughing stock.
Investigations by The Weekender revealed that Yelly cooked up the whole story and in actual fact she suffers from academic deficiency and was nowhere near the school during the speech and prize-giving day held on October 10.
This came about after school authorities and students raised alarm about Yelly’s purported success and alerted the paper that she had used her craftiness to mislead this publication and the whole of Zimbabwe into believing that she is a shining beacon with a bright future.
Speaking to The Weekender, Nyamauru High School head Mr Gwashu expressed disappointment and agitation at Yelly’s mischief.
He confirmed that she did not win even a single accolade.
“I can confirm that Yelly misrepresented facts to you. When we held our prize-giving ceremony on the 10th, she did not get any prize. In fact, she did not even attend the ceremony. The girl is a habitual liar and she is quite a handful.
“When I asked her why she had gone to such an extent of lying, she said she wanted fame and publicity. I even advised her that if she wanted publicity so badly, she could have just sent her pictures so that she would be featured as The Weekender Girl for the whole week,” said the head.
He, however, refused to comment on her general performance in class.
Mr Gwashu also distanced the school from Yelly’s wayward behaviour, saying moral purity was central to the school’s values and those who go against the grain were not to be tolerated because they bring the school’s image into disrepute.
“We strive to help our students excel academically and morally because we want to be a school of choice, to which all students will come for excellence. Our school stands for honesty and moral purity is central to our values. We want the society to appreciate us. Like our motto rightfully states, our intention is to give life, nothing else,” he continued.
The Manica Post’s previous edition published that Yelly got accolades in Literature, English Language, Biology, Food and Nutrition, Integrated Science, History, Geography, Religious Studies, Orator of the Year as well as the overall best student.
The paper, however, learnt that five of these prizes had been scooped by Tariro Harahwa, who became the overall best student. The orator of the year award was, in fact, won by Dean Murinda, an Upper Six student at the school.
The Literature, Food and Nutrition, Religious Studies and Integrated Science prizes went to Kasayi Previous, Jessie Tholana, Lien Madire and Francis Nharu respectively.
Asked to account for her behaviour, Yelly did not say much.
She simply said she did not know what had gotten into her when she told all these lies to the Press.
