BACK then all mischief and other bizarre incidents were associated with Mutare’s oldest ghetto suburb, Sakubva. You can think of drugs and drug peddling, ‘mini-surgeries’, fornication, witchcraft, theft, robberies and shebeens. All these used to define Sakubva, but thank God for Operation Murambatsvina at least there has been some positive change.
Lest people think that I am completely exonerating Sakubva from bad behaviour! No, all I am saying is that at least there is some change. I surely would not be tempted to exonerate this old suburb especially after a sister disapproved of my suggestion that if she could not sleep because of excessive heat then she could sleep with her door or window open. Her argument was that if she slept with the doors and windows open in Sakubva, chances were that she would be stolen as well. That is Sakubva for you!
While Sakubva is seemingly taking a back seat in making headlines for the wrong reasons another suburb in Mutare is actually doing the opposite.
It seems Dangamvura is out to prove a point because in the last couple of years it has been hogging the limelight for all the wrong reasons. From cheating spouses caught red-handed to a motorist allegedly dropping a snake at an intersection, what of funny creatures falling from the ceiling and then a snail-like object extracted from the foundation of a house. In fact the list of these real-life dramas emanating from Dangamvura is long.
What is now worrisome is the perpetration of these vices by young girls if recent reports in The Manica Post are anything to go by. I don’t think Mercy Ngwebu, a correspondent with The Manica Post, will be amused to hear about a young girl called Yelly Kaminyu after having been sold a fabricated story by this purported ‘whizkid’ from Nyamauru High School.
I am just astounded to say the least because to imagine how she cooked the whole story and gather courage to approach the media with such a lie and then pull through with it is just unbelievable.
While what she did was wrong it is this kind of planning, scheming and execution that brings success to people if done in the right way and while the school authorities later described her as not being bright, what she did demonstrates that she is intelligent in a way but something has spoiled her life such that while she has an idea of what she can become, it is proving to be a tall order for her and so she decides to take matters into her own hands.
For a whole week Yelly was a ‘‘celebrity’’ until like what happens with all lies, the truth eventually came out but still it’s not all hope lost for the young girl. Something good can still be salvaged out of her. Enough of Yelly.
There is another one from Dangamvura, a form one girl who allegedly stole $6 500 from her mother and went on a spending spree with her ‘‘boyfriend’’ and later hooked up with another pair of friends to ‘‘enjoy’’ the ‘‘bag’’. Mischief of such nature has usually been committed by boys and not girls, but it seems the tables are turning. Why would a form one pupil steal such a huge amount of money and engage in a movie-like spending escapade? Would it be correct to blame the kid alone or would it be wise to probe her family life? I wish I could meet these ‘‘newsmakers’’ and get to know them better. God help Dangamvura.
