Dancer “Cocoa” (Ellain Ncube) was one of the standout stars at the National Arts Merit Awards (Nama), captivating audiences with her striking Afrocentric outfit that left many in awe.

Designed by her mother, Sithembile Malaba Ngwenya, the outfit aptly named Malaba Royalty — celebrated African heritage with intricate craftsmanship and cultural symbolism.

Cocoa who hails from Bulawayo lit up the red carpet, exuding confidence. With a radiant smile and poised demeanour, she became a focal point of admiration, drawing eager fans who lined up to take photos with her.

The outfit, a masterpiece of traditional artistry, was crafted using ubuhlalu (beads), isikusha (traditional headpiece), ilala (woven grass), ingedla, a touch of poly cotton and letshoba lebhiza (horsehair tassels).

Speaking about the creation, Cocoa who is also a model, said she and her mother had passion for reviving Zimbabwe’s rich, yet often overlooked cultural heritage.

“This outfit was designed by Sithembile Malaba Ngwenya, my lovely mother who is a designer. Initially it was meant for Miss Nature Zimbabwe’s National Costume segment but due to unforeseen circumstances, I couldn’t participate in the pageant,” Cocoa explained.

“This piece is a bold statement about the strength and beauty of African women. It serves as a call for African queens to embrace their roots, culture and natural elegance. Our goal was to restore appreciation for Zimbabwe’s beautiful cultural traditions. The design aligned perfectly with this year’s Nama theme, ‘Afrofuturism,’ celebrating African heritage with a modern twist.”

Cocoa also highlighted the significance of wearing the outfit on the first day of March, which marked the beginning of Women’s Month.

Looking ahead, as a nominee in the Nama 2024 Outstanding Female Dancer category where her dance choreography competed against that of Tanaka Machikicho (Into the Light) and Celine Madziva (Respect My Team), Cocoa remains optimistic despite losing out to Madziva.

“I invite everyone to join me on this journey as it unfolds. I have exciting projects in the pipeline, which I will reveal later,” she said. — @mthabisi_mthire
