A LATE-NIGHT police chase in Gweru turned fatal when a speeding Toyota Aqua slammed into a tree, killing two passengers on the spot — sparking public outrage and a probe into police conduct.
The crash happened around 10:30 PM on Monday along Bristol Road in Mkoba 11, after the vehicle’s driver allegedly lost control while fleeing from Constable Sakala of ZRP Mkoba.
According to a statement by National Police Spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the Zimbabwe Republic Police is now investigating both the accident and the conduct of the pursuing officer.
“Investigations are underway into a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 28 April 2025 at around 2230 hours where two Toyota Aqua occupants died on the spot after their vehicle hit a tree during a speed chase with Constable Sakala,” said Comm Nyathi.
The names of the deceased have not been released, but social media has exploded with video clips showing the mangled wreckage — and allegations that police may have pushed the driver too far.
Witnesses say the chase was like something out of an action movie.
“We heard screeching tyres, then a loud bang. By the time we got there, the car was split and the bodies were lifeless,” said one shocked resident, who requested anonymity.
Police acknowledged the officer’s questionable conduct.
“The ZRP reiterates that both criminal and disciplinary action will be taken against Constable Sakala,” added Comm Nyathi.
Angry locals are calling for justice and answers, accusing rogue officers of turning routine patrols into death missions.
“How do you chase someone like that through a residential area at night? Now two families are mourning,” fumed a Mkoba resident.
Two lives have been lost in a flash… all for a chase that didn’t have to happen.
