THE Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has set its sights on a shady fuel scandal rocking the Bulawayo City Council (BCC), where over 20 000 litres of diesel allegedly vanished — right under officials’ noses!
At the centre of the scandal is a senior manager in the Fire and Ambulance Services Department, accused of turning his Toyota Land Cruiser “Command Vehicle” into a mobile fuel bank, siphoning off hundreds of litres every week — all while ambulances struggle to run.
The suspect allegedly exploited a faulty speedometer and dodgy logbooks to fill up twice on Mondays — first at Khami Road stores, then again at the Famona Fire Station. He allegedly repeated the same routine on Wednesdays and Fridays, clocking up to 200 litres in just five days, while claiming to be on emergency duty.
ZACC spokesperson Simiso Mlevu confirmed the commission is investigating.
“We are handling the matter, but await the outcome of the internal audit from BCC,” she said.
Inside sources say the diesel was resold to black market fuel dealers in Nketa 6, operating under a tree near Masiyepambili Drive.
Meanwhile, real ambulances are running on fumes.
“One ambulance covers 320km a week and gets just 210 litres. Yet this so-called Command Vehicle barely moves and guzzles more,” fumed a BCC insider.
City mayor Councillor David Coltart vowed action, tweeting:
“Council is seized with the matter. We promise transparency and will make findings public.”
With only 7 out of 30 ambulances operational, residents are fuming:
“People are dying while someone is swimming in diesel!” shouted a disgruntled EMT.
As the scandal unravels, all eyes are now on the City Hall fuel mafia.
