Makhado police spokesman Captain Maano Sadike said yesterday that the injured were taken to Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital for treatment.
He said the Tata truck was travelling from the city of Polokwane to Beitbridge with 38 illegal immigrants being deported from South Africa.
“When it approached Ingwe Motel, the driver, who is also a policeman, lost control of the vehicle and it veered off the road and collided with another vehicle.
“As a result, the policeman was trapped between the two cars and was critically injured while four Zimbabweans were seriously injured.”
He said several other deportees suffered minor injuries and were treated and discharged.
“Those who were seriously injured are still recuperating at Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital.
“We have since repatriated the rest of the group to Zimbabwe,” said Capt Sadike.
