admin Speaking at Harare Central Hospital on Thursday, DFID’s permanent secretary Mr Mark Lowcock, said Britain was pleased with progress made in reviving Zimbabwe’s health system.
He pledged to continue supporting the country to achieve its goals of the National Health Strategy.
“We are really impressed with the progress made so far in reviving basic health services and we will continue providing support to Zimbabwe,” Mr Lowcock said.
Mr Lowcock said with the funding, the Health Transition Fund would receive US$80 million and about US$30 million would go towards procurement of anti-retroviral drugs.
Revitalisation of community health centre committees and monitoring and evaluation of the programme will receive at least US$3 million each.
“This package of support sums up what British assistance is all about: services such as healthcare, education, clean water and sanitation. In short, this is great news for ordinary Zimbabweans who need access to health care,” he said.
Health and Child Welfare Minister Dr Henry Madzorera, said the pledge was yet another sign of great commitment from DFID after several other projects they were funding in the country.
“The US$120 million support pledged by DFID will certainly see us on our way to eliminating user fees for pregnant women and under fives and to ensuring universal access to skilled attendance at delivery,” Dr Madzorera said.
“Let us work hard as a people to realise our vision of a healthy Zimbabwe, with quality health services equitably distributed.”
Earlier, the DFID team and Ministry of Health and Child Welfare officials toured the Children’s Hospital and the Family Support Clinic.
