Diarrhoea claims five lives in one week

A diarrhoea outbreak has swept across Zimbabwe, claiming five lives and infecting 7 232 people in the past week alone, the Ministry of Health and Child Care’s Disease Surveillance Report.

According to the Ministry’s Disease Surveillance Report released on Friday, most cases (4 029) were among children under five, with Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland West and Mashonaland East provinces being the hardest hit.

The cumulative total of diarrhoea cases since the outbreak began now stands at 155 100, with 57 fatalities reported.

Health officials have urged the public to take precautions to prevent the spread of the disease, including washing hands frequently, drinking clean water and seeking medical attention immediately when symptoms are noted.

The Government has also deployed teams to affected areas to distribute water purification tablets and conduct public awareness campaigns.
