musical scene that has to be nipped in the bud before it becomes a cancer, which we will not be able to deal with.
I mean music is somehow like a region to some, a thing that most people especially the youths look up to as an inspirational and a chance to change their lives.
A lot of lives have been changed or rather transformed for some artistes only through their musical prowess and talents and I think we have to applaud those who have made it and learn from them.
We have seen many youths and elders eking out a living through music and what an inspiration it has been to so many youths especially those from the ghetto.
Nearly all the successful musicians the world over have faced many trials and tribulations but they waded their ways on in the murky waters to where they are today.
Credit has to be given to the soldiers who have tried to move on despite the challenges they have been facing or are still facing, and I believe such people have to be respected.
However, during the past few weeks I have witnessed what I can say is decay in our music and a paradigm shift from what music should be.
Music can be used as a shift from a life of poverty and hunger to one of good self-esteem, prosperity, some bucks in the bank and an acceptance from the members of our community.
But of late there is a general unruliness on the music scene such that there is always infighting, “disses” thrown here and there and a general scornful attitude among some artistes.
I was really taken aback by the resurgence of “diss” tracks and acrimony among our musicians, who should be pulling up together and forging a way forward to the betterment of themselves.
I hate to say it but I believe there is this PHD (Pull Him Down) mentality in some of our musicians who don’t want to see others succeed where they have failed or are afraid to trod into.
As I digress, you see there was this incident some time way back when I was still green in journalism and we gatecrashed this cocktail party in town and I had the chance to meet one of these veteran and famed journalists at that function.
I was so excited at seeing this guy as he was one of the few dudes who had motivated me to be a “journo” and seeing and talking to him made me feel relevant – in fact, I felt like I was now in the big league.
As we talked he gave some valuable advice about doing the job which up to now is still valuable in my sojourns.
I saw him as an inspiration, someone who had influenced me to take over this journo business instead of going to law school which my father had hoped for.
I was a bit disappointed when he just advised me to be respectful to the elders who have seen it all as that is a sure way of succeeding before he dismissed me rather politely.
However, I am getting worried by how some of these young cats have no respect to their elders in the urban grooves musical scene that they disrespect at any given time.
There is this green kid from Chitungwiza named Carlos Green who has just released a song “Godo Reply” where he disses the “Godo” originator Stunner left right and centre.
Green alleges he is better than Stunner and has a few things to teach to him as well, also forgotten Trinta of the Honeyvibes fame released another diss track aimed at Winky D, who I see as the dancehall king.
Stunner without doubt is on the rise and there is no way you can talk about local hip-hop without mentioning his name. He has been to heel and back in terms of urban music such that I regard him as more of a
pioneer.
When Stunner was still a struggling dancer and singer gatecrashing other artistes’ acts and churning out mediocre songs like “Rudo Rwemari” at a time urban grooves was laughed at where was this Green at?
Stunner despite his shortfalls is an icon and inspiration on the urban grooves scene and I have seen how his music has got a big impact in a lot of people’s lives, young or old.
Likewise the Bigman – Winky D – is a rising great and a hope to many a ghetto youths on how to escape from poverty through hard work and be a person to be respected.
So I feel people like Trinta and Green should use their artistic abilities to make a name for themselves and influence other youths rather than try to ride on other people’s backs.
There is no need to be disrespecting other people and if they feel they are better let them show that on song rather than try to pull down others who are doing their own thing.
This dissing game is not good at all as it can cause a lot of unnecessary problems like what happened to Biggie and Pac and I believe these youths should be helping each other rather than shoving shovels down each other’s throats.
