A DOG that was spotted running with what appeared to be an infant’s hand left a community in shock.
This eventually led to a horrifying discovery — a shallow grave covered with twigs.
The remains found therein were those of a child. The mother had delivered alone, before burying the baby in a thicket behind her homestead.
Christine Nyoni (34) from Mayobodo area, under Chief Hobodo of Mangwe, Matabeleland South province, killed her new-born baby to conceal an extramarital affair.
The woman was having an affair while her husband was away in South Africa, resulting in the pregnancy.
Nyoni appeared before a Plumtree resident magistrate charged with concealing the birth of a child, as defined in Section 106 (2) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23.
She pleaded guilty to the offence.
“The court finds your behaviour deeply disturbing and cruel,” charged the magistrate.
Nyoni then pleaded for leniency from the court, claiming she killed the baby to save her marriage.
“The child belongs to another man. My husband works in South Africa and I was afraid of his reaction if he found out I had been with someone else while he was away. I also did not want my in-laws to know I was pregnant by another man,” she said.
She was then sentenced to six months in prison, of which three were suspended for five years on condition she does not commit a similar offence.
The remaining three months were further suspended on condition she completes 105 hours of community service at Makorokoro Primary School.
It was the State’s case that sometime in April, Nyoni gave birth.
She then dug a hole in a nearby bush, approximately 25 metres from her homestead, and buried the child.
It is reported that on May 2, her mother-in-law was in the company of a neighbour when they saw a blood-stained blanket belonging to her and an old dish covering a small hole, with tree branches around it.
The two also noticed dog paw prints around the scene.
It was after following the tracks that they came across a dog carrying what appeared to be an infant’s hand.
They reported the matter to the police.
Police officers who were assigned to deal with the matter dug the shallow grave and recovered the child’s remains.

Fake police officer harvests semen from learners
In a rather bizarre incident, a 32-year-old man from Nineva village, Mbembesi, Matabeleland North province, appeared in court after he allegedly masqueraded as a police officer and forced three boys aged 15 to masturbate and ejaculate into condoms.
Phumulani Masango pleaded not guilty to seven counts of theft, impersonating a police officer, criminal insult, fraud and kidnapping.
A Bulawayo regional magistrate remanded him in custody to May 28.
The court heard that on March 18, 2024, at Fingo Business Centre, Masango approached two juveniles who were on their way home from school and introduced himself as a police officer.
He went on to accuse them of being drunk, slapped them and proceeded to search their bags.
Masango then ordered the boys to follow him to the police base in Mbembesi but he did not enter the charge office.
He ordered them to board a Toyota Wish that was supposedly headed to Bulawayo.
The car, however, stopped after about 200 metres and they disembarked.
The suspect then demanded the juveniles’ cellphones, claiming it was against the law for learners to have such gadgets.
He claimed it was his duty as a police officer to ensure that the law was observed.
The juveniles were then locked in a room that was close to a bar.
After some time, Masango returned and indicated that he was taking them to the school authorities as it was late and risky for them to go home.
However, he led them to his homestead and while they were there, he ordered them to wear condoms and self-stimulate.
The juveniles complied and when they failed to release semen, he ordered them to urinate and repeat the act.
They eventually ejaculated, after which he told them to remove the condoms and place them on the floor.
He promised to buy them food.
The victims were released the following morning.
On March 29, 2024, Masango met another boy, whom he ordered to follow him to his homestead and forced him to masturbate and leave the used condom on the floor.
The three juveniles reported the matter to the police.
It was also discovered that sometime in March, in Mbethe village, Masango approached Tapson Majola and introduced himself as a lawyer after receiving a tip-off that he needed legal representation for his son who had been arrested.
Masango promised to represent him in court and Majola paid him US$250.
Later, Majola discovered that Masango was not a lawyer after he heard that he had been arrested for impersonating a police officer.

Man axes neighbour five times over donkeys
A man who was accused by his neighbour of using his donkeys without permission was left fighting for his life after he was axed several times.
Erick Nkomo from Mbalibali Line in Tsholotsho appeared before a Bulawayo magistrate facing an attempted murder charge.
He pleaded not guilty.
He was remanded in custody for continuation of trial.
In his defence, he said: “I did not axe him. We were involved in a fierce argument after he used my donkeys without my permission. After that, we fought and he got injured.”
A court heard that on March 19, Nkomo met Ncube using his donkeys to pull a scotch-cart and he confronted him.
After a heated argument, they parted ways.
Ncube never knew that the following day, Nkomo would be a surprise visitor at his home.
It is alleged that Nkomo, who was wielding an axe, arrived at Ncube’s home shortly after 4am and forcibly opened the door.
It is alleged that he headed to Ncube’s bed and axed him three times on the head and twice in the face, leaving him lying in a pool of blood.
Ncube screamed for help and his parents dashed to his room and took him to hospital.
The matter was reported to the police.
A manhunt was launched, leading to Nkomo’s arrest. — B-Metro

Teenager groped by school gardener
A Founders High School gardener is in hot soup after he allegedly grabbed a 16-year-old girl and touched her buttocks and breasts, before caressing her private parts and ejaculating on her thighs.
For the offence, Mgcini Tshuma (35), who stays at the school, appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Collet Ncube facing an attempted rape charge.
He pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody.
The court heard that sometime in April this year, Tshuma allegedly proposed love to the teenager, but his proposal was turned down.
Tshuma did not give up.
Sometime on a Sunday, he was hired to do a part-time job by the complainant’s parents.
It is said at 10.30am the teenager prepared tea for the gardener and went to give it to him.
The girl never knew that Tshuma would spring a surprise.
Tshuma reportedly grabbed her by her hand and fondled her breasts, buttocks and private parts. It is said he held her firmly and took out his manhood and tried to rape her, but the minor managed to wrestle herself from his tight grip and, in the process, he ejaculated on her thighs.
The teen managed to free herself, ran to her parents and informed them about the incident.
A police report was subsequently made and Tshuma was arrested. — Bulawayo Bureau
