Don’t rush into studio

honest with themselves first and seek honest opinions from friends and family, but in this whole exercise I want us together as Zimbabweans to be genuinely interested in the development of quality products. When you say to your brother or sister they can sing, do you really know what you are talking about?

If you sing in a praise and worship team or church choir is that enough reason for you to consider investing in a musical production and, after all, why do you think we should listen to you.
This habit that says if so and so is doing it or selling this I am also going to do likewise must go and here is why I say so.

Judging from the number of CDs I have come across it seems that every Tom, Dick and Harry have found their way to studio just to record their weird voices and crazy sounds which I believe are not meant for anyone’s enjoyment and must never be heard at                        all.

I lose count of how many projects I have listened to but I can boldly hear one or two good ones. The rest goes into the rubbish bin never to be seen or heard.
No, no, no, I didn’t say that maybe I meant to say that we need to revise the reasons why we produce music especially on CDs.

Well, if the truth be told, it seems common sense is not common anymore from all segments of society. Maybe the distortion in the industry in terms of music production seems to create opportunities for one to just to try their luck.
Many people have asked me if have recorded before and when I intend to release my music.

Let me say I have recorded with a number of local groups not as a solo artiste and I have also written songs for a couple of musicians.
Honestly, I still need to sharpen and season my talent and so in the meantime I will play and sing whenever I can so that I can refine my music. The fact that I have performed with some great artistes in Zimbabwe does not give me justification to go into the studio and record. Take note of that.

The question is, “Do I have the relevant skills and the power to sustain a real career in music?”
A lot of artistes today are studio based; they have never sung or performed anywhere. They just wake up and go straight to the studio.
And it can be heard so loud and clear that you are not there.

No matter what ingredients and spices that producers may put in the music meal, believe me it doesn’t work.
And to those who have recorded something let me say well done, keep it it up.

This can be an indicator that you are a goal-getter but sad to say this may also be something that you can share with people around you and seek to be guided before you take the next step.
A long time ago when all was well we used to go to a studio to record what was called a demo tape.

This was so that you would listen to you and you could give other people to comment or even take it to a record label for them to consider giving you a recording contract.
This culture I think should be reintroduced even though a lot has changed.
Let me also say that don’t expect your music will be played simply because you have given it to someone.

Sad to end on this note some of your CDs are demo material and should be used to help shape you and not used on big platforms such as radio.
Keep on keeping on
