MUTARE-BASED choral group Dangamvura Old Students Association is next week expected to leave for South Africa for a Palmolive Music Festive competition. The competition, which is organised by Old Mutual in South Africa, will see several choirs from South Africa and Zimbabwe battling it out for supremacy.
It will be held in Thohoyandou.
In an interview, the group manager, Patrick Matsikenyiri, said preparations for the contest were at an advanced stage.
“We are having thorough practices on a daily basis and we are raring to go. We are leaving Mutare on September 3 and we will be residing at Iyani Bible School,” he said.
Matsikenyiri, a veteran music practitioner, was the first director of Africa University Choir after its inception in 1993.
He was also the first director to take the university’s choir to the United States of America.
Last year, the group, which has more than 50 choristers, could not make it into the top three of the South Africa Choral Festival which was held at the University of Limpopo.
Heavyweights Chitungwiza Harmony Singers emerged tops, while UL Choristers and Baphalaborwa SAPS Choir came out second and third respectively.
