It is a Friday evening and Las Vegas Club Southerton is a hive of activity. Old skool music beams from the large speakers on each side of the stage and on the turntables is faceless character Dr Zobha. He cracks jokes and mixes local and international yester-year hits with ease, rolling out a string of exciting music.
The venue swells as hours tick towards midnight and the dance floor gets hotter as holy waters tickle merrymakers. This is music madness and this has become the norm every weekend at the joint since Dr Zobha and his new side-kick DJ Flabba landed entertainment slots at the venue.
Although most people are now convinced that the man in that popular mask and funny outfit is Davies Mugadza, Dr Zobha has a way keeping his audiences guessing.
He has brought a new lease of night-life at Las Vegas and it seems he is never short of new ideas. He loves making fun and seems to enjoy his selections more than his audiences, especially in the dying hours of his slot when he downs his Castle lager quart through the small hole on his mask.
Considering its size, it seems the hole was designed more for the quart than the microphone but Dr Zobha expertly utilizes it for both.
He is happy with the response he is getting from his fans around the Southerton area.
“I am happy that ‘mapurisa’ (police officers from the nearby Southerton Police station) ‘pamwe chete nevanhu vemuSoutherton’ and surrounding places ‘varikufarira ngoma’,” said Dr Zobha.
“It is a good experience. People should enjoy themselves during weekends because most of them work hard during the week. We are happy with our new spot and we be here for as long as we can. We play at many other venues but we are enjoying it here. It is a good place. We enjoy and the people enjoy. That’s what we call joy.”
DJ Flabba, who takes the turntables before and after Dr Zobha’s slot, said he was happy with their combination and saluted his partner for his creativity.
“I am more into current hits and he loves old skool. People are enjoying the combination and we salute them for their support,” said DJ Flabba.
“I am always amazed by mudhara Zobha’s creativity. He does not run out of steam. He is a funny character yet he is serious about his mixes and selection. People are loving it here at Las Vegas. We will be playing here every weekend.”
