ZIFA president Cuthbert Dube has taken a swipe at referees who accept bribes saying this was not good for the development of football in the country. He was speaking at the close of a referees’ course in Harare yesterday.

“Referees should not be tempted to accept bribes as it is not good for the development of the sport,” said Dube.

“We don’t like to see some pre-determined matches as that will affect our standards.

“A better team should win not that referees get involved with the results of matches.

“We are happy that the course went on well and everyone has managed to get his certificate which should be put to good use.”

Zimbabwe Olympic Committee chief executive, Anna Mguni, has hailed the Zimbabwe Referees Committee for holding a successful clinic.

Mguni was the guest of honour at the official closing ceremony of the week-long referees’ course.

Seventy referees were added with certificates of attendance after the session held by South Africa-based regional soccer instructor Carlos Henriques, Felix Tangawarima and Malawi’s Mark Mzengo.

“We are happy that the event went on well and we believe that the course will go a long way in helping improve soccer.

“What was done is a good example as soccer is one of the most followed sport and it needs professional referees.

“I am happy that everyone managed to complete the course and that shows how serious you were taking the course. The involvement of top instructors is a good thing for us as well,” said Mguni.

The top-flight and lower leagues referees promised that they will implement what they learned.

Simkangeliso Sibanda said they will return to their province with something new.

“We are happy with what we have learnt and I hope everyone is going to put into practice. We are going to share the knowledge with others who could not make it in our respective provinces.

“The course went on well and we hope to have more of these refresher courses in future,” said Sibanda.
