A 17-year-old HIV positive teenager who raped a toddler was only exposed by an anonymous caller who revealed the matter to the police after the mother had tried to conceal the case.
The boy appeared before a Harare magistrate and pleaded for forgiveness after he was convicted of raping the three-year-old girl.
The suspected rapist and the toddler are cousins.
The man pleaded guilty to rape charges when he appeared magistrate Mr Adonia Masawi.
He was remanded in custody to September 4 for sentence.
The prosecutor Mr Liberty Gono told the court that sometime in July this year around 11 am in Caledonia, the teenager went to the toddler home.
He approached her mother and asked to take the minor with him to their grandmother’s place to play with other children.
Since it was not the first time for him to take the child with him, the mother gave him the authority.
However, she was surprised to see him coming back with the toddler less than two hours instead of in the evening.
After two weeks the toddler told her mother that the relative took her to a nearby bush and took off her pant.
She told her mother that he raped her. The mother proceeded to his home where he confronted him before other relatives. He admitted that he only slept with the toddler once.
The matter came to light after Mabvuku Police Station received an anonymous tip off.
