POLICE in Nyanga on Sunday arrested two suspected dagga dealers who had smuggled 144kgs of the drug into the country from Mozambique.

David Mavhiri and Talent Mutingwende, both of Marondera, appeared before Nyanga magistrate, Mrs Constance Marutya early this week and were remanded in custody to June 16.

The State, led by Mr Tawanda Mashanda, opposed bail citing rampant smuggling activities along the border.

Mr Mashanda also argued that the State has a strong case against Mavhiri and Mutingwende and that they are likely to abscond if granted bail.

He said the police received a tip-off that Mavhiri and Mutingwende were in possession of dagga.

The police then intercepted their vehicle and arrested them.

“On June 5, a police officer received information from an informer that there was a vehicle driving along the Kaitano-Kanyimo Road carrying sacks of dagga.

“A team of armed police officers proceeded to a strategic point just before Kanyimo Bridge and laid an ambush. At around 2am, the team saw the car approaching the bridge. They intercepted the car and the driver tried to escape.

“Police fired warning shots into the air and the car stopped.
‘‘The car was searched and nine sacks of dagga weighing 144,5kgs were recovered,” said Mr Mashanda.
