A MUTAMBARA Mission-based Ecocash agent regretted the day he stole his employer’s money and made a false report to the police that an unknown man had robbed him.
Jabulani Sawana (25) of Mutambara Mission in Chief Mutambara’s area appeared before senior Mutare magistrate Mrs Sekai Chiundura pleading guilty to the charges he was facing of deliberately supplying false information to the police.
Mr Donald Mudadirwa prosecuted.
He told the court that at an unknown date in November, Sawana converted $850 to his own use.
“To cover up for the offence, the accused made a plan and made a report at ZRP Mutare Central under RRB number 2341389.
“He said he had been robbed along Chimanimani-Mutare road by an unknown accused person who had offered him a lift.
“When he was interviewed by a Criminal Investigation Department officer Try Sabuneti, Sawana then confessed that he had made a false report to cover up for the company’s money which he had converted to his own use.
“He was then arrested and detained,” said Mr Mudadirwa.
In his defence, Sawana said that he was afraid that his employer would cause his arrest.
“I was afraid that I would be arrested if my employer finds out that I had used the company’s money,” said Sawana.
Mrs Chiundura sentenced him to 90 days imprisonment. The sentence was wholly suspended on condition that he pays a fine of $150 on or before April 10.
