EDITORIAL COMMENT: Driven by desire to achieve Vision 2030

WITH Zimbabwe’s harmonised elections having come and gone with President Mnangagwa and other elected leaders taking their oaths of office and being sworn in, work for the office bearers is cut out and it is time to get down to serious business.

President Mnangagwa deservedly earned a second term in office, which gives him a renewed and extended mandate.

He has pledged to continue with his servant leadership to steer the country to prosperity.

In the President’s words, there were no losers in the plebiscite.

Rather, this was a victory for all the people of Zimbabwe in our march to nation building.

“Zimbabwe is surely on the rise. Our national development philosophy Nyika inovakwa, igotongwa, igonamatirwa nevene vayo/Ilizwe lakhiwa, libuswe, likhulekelwe ngabanikazi balo” shall continue to be the beacon of our pro-people policies, anchored on Pan-African values and norms.

“This philosophy sums up our sovereignty as well as the collective duty and obligations we have to develop our country and the African continent,” said President Mnangagwa in his speech during the swearing in ceremony early this week.

This is a call to action in building our country and those elected must take a cue from the President, who is always leading from the front and practicing what he preaches.

It is time to walk the talk in delivering on the promises made during the campaign period, while dutifully preserving and safeguarding our national unity, peace and harmony.

Patriotism is key in achieving all this.

President Mnangagwa is an action oriented man whose servant leadership is driving Zimbabwe towards the attainment of an empowered and prosperous upper-middle income society.

Manicaland Province had the honour of receiving President Mnangagwa last week on Thursday as he hit the ground running and kicked off his second term of office with a tour of duty in Buhera District where he officially commissioned a US$130 million Sabi Star Lithium Floatation Plant.

Building on the cornerstones of robust infrastructural development, agricultural revolution, industrialisation as well as the mining and tourism sectors, among others, Zimbabwe is marching towards fulfilling its national aspirations under the astute leadership of President Mnangagwa.

High-impact and life-changing projects will continue driving the country towards Vision 2030, informed by the National Development Strategy (NDS1) which is firmly anchored on the 14 key pillars that are designed to spur economic development and social transformation.

Efforts to improve the living standards of the people, especially those in rural communities, must be heightened while also ensuring that the challenges being faced by urban dwellers are effectively resolved by expanding service delivery.

This will ensure that no one and no place will be left behind.

Responsive pro-people policies and programmes have always been the Second Republic’s forte and this is bearing fruit on many fronts of the economy.

Already, one of the priority areas of NDS1 — food and nutrition security — is currently being satisfied as the country is food secure following a successful seasons hinged on several agricultural programmes implemented by Government.

The construction of dams and accelerated irrigation development will help in insulating the agricultural sector from the vagaries of climate change.

Work on equipping and capacitating health and educational institutions across the country is also ongoing.

Tapping into the country’s skilled and hard-working labour force, Zimbabwe can exploit its mineral resources for increased beneficiation and value addition to keep the spark of industrialisation alive.

As we roll our sleeves and put shoulders to the wheel, let President Mnangagwa’s mantra that “Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo/Ilizwe lakhiwa ngabanikazi nalo” echo throughout the tenure of the newly elected office bearers. Brick by brick and stone upon stone, let us ensure that the country’s development trajectory is irreversible.
