EDITORIAL COMMENT: Rogue bouncers deserve to be locked up

HARARE revellers celebrated with peace of mind after two rogue bouncers that were notorious for gatecrashing shows and concerts were arrested and caged last week.

The two scoundrels spent New Year’s eve and New Year’s Day after the court remanded them in custody to today.

Music fans that attended album launches at the Harare International Conference Centre and City Sports Centre as well  as revellers  that thronged various nightspots enjoyed in peace.

The thug bouncers, Gideon Sanyangore and Blessing Kumunda, had been terrorising defenceless revellers at local nightclubs and music shows in Harare, seemingly with impunity.

Music promoters had complained about their violent conduct, as they would forcibly impose themselves at the gate and collect entry charges which they pocketed.

Over and above their thievery, they would also assault revellers unprovoked.

However, their nuisance came to an end when they were captured on video attacking party goers and security at Pabloz Night Club in Borrowdale.

One of them even brandished an okapi knife and attempted to stab a Pabloz security guard.

Sanyangore and Kumunda boasted that they were untouchable because they were well connected to powerful politicians. However, they were finally arrested following the Pabloz Night Club brawl.

The pair was charged with attempted murder and will be back in court today for bail hearing. Police have appealed to victims of the two bouncers to come forward. This should come as good news to the innocent victims who were harassed by Sanyangore and Kumunda throughout 2022

As they return to court today, we hope police have a strong case against these hoodlums. It would be futile to arrest them for headlines only for the case to crumble in court, as this would be misconstrued as truth that the bouncers are connected.

According to video evidence shared by people on social media, as well as tales of terror by the two, they deserve to be locked up for a long time.

This would send a message that bouncers have no right to be throwing around their weight committing crime due to their body sizes. It will teach them to use more brain than brawn.

The two have other pending cases and some victims have vowed to work with the police to ensure they don’t escape justice.

Police just need to gather enough evidence to make the State’s case stronger. Their release from prison will endanger the lives of their victims, most of whom were living in fear.

A good example has to be set to ensure that the hoodlums pay for their sins. Hopefully the State strongly opposes bail pending further investigations to bring the matter to finality.

It would be a travesty if they are allowed to roam our streets again without being caged for what we saw them doing. Victims injured after being assaulted by Sanyangore and Kumunda must also sue the two.

Whoever was protecting them must be exposed and investigated for aiding crime. They have been stealing from innocent people.  The bouncers should learn to work for their money and not to intimidate promoters and revellers.

Night clubs should not be turned into war zones.  Revellers work hard and deserve to unwind with their friends without being intimidated by thugs.
