TEACHING used to be a well respected profession the world over, and for those that pursued it back then, it wasn’t just another profession, but a calling.
Most teachers, whether stationed at rural or urban schools, took their jobs seriously, and performed it with diligence and pride.
They had one aim – ensuring that students who passed through their hands passed.
While it remains a calling for some, however, some monsters have crept in unnoticed and tarnished the good image of a profession that has helped produce and sharpen some of our country’s brightest minds in different industries.
Instead of helping mould brains of young students, these monster teachers sexually abuse their students.
As if that abuse isn’t terrible enough, they then use their positions and status to silence the girl child, they would have violated.
These men hiding under the teaching banner ought to be weeded out and thrown into prison.
Young girls’ whole futures have been destroyed by these beasts masquerading as teachers.
Our lawmakers must craft legislation which severely punishes these sick sexual predators that have robbed schoolgirls of their innocence, self-worth and sense of humanity for life.
Sadly, this evil has been allowed to firmly take root in the teaching profession because few cases are being reported.
Some cases are covered up at school level, and some at family level.
But while schools and families protect their images, the violated girls’ entire lives would have been shattered for good.
Some just go through life having already lost hope in humanity, and with no hope or objectives, but just shattered dreams, due to the abuse they would have been subjected to by some teachers.
Last Friday, we ran a sad story about a Dzivaresekwa teacher who allegedly raped his 11-year-old extra lessons student.
The victim stays with her grandmother, who had entrusted the teacher to help instil knowledge to her granddaughter.
The 56-year-old teacher was expected to perform his role as a parent first to the young 11-year-old girl, but failed in every facet of an adult.
The shameless teacher instead took advantage of the girl’s home situation and raped her on different occasions.
It’s totally unacceptable for a man to propose love to a kid.
The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education must be proactive and flush out these teachers from the education sector.
Instead of teachers playing secondary parental roles, some male ones have become a danger to our girl children.
Daily schoolgirls are touched inappropriately and proposed to by male teachers.
The education chiefs need to do something about this growing evil trend.
We want exemplary teachers that protect our children from any form of abuse.
